Sure Start West Lothian
Sure Start supports parents and carers to make a positive start in young children’s lives. Help is available to all parents and carers (grandparents, childminders etc.) of young children aged up to three years old. This is available in various ways including groups, courses, activities, and also one to one support.
There are several family groups which provide:
- Opportunities for children’s development through play
- Support for families to help them understand and meet the needs of their child
- Opportunities to meet with other parents including Young Mums To Be (YM2B) and Young Dads To Be (YD2B)
- Assistance for parents to access local services
There are groups for prospective parents, fathers, baby massages etc.
As well as activity groups, Sure start offer parenting programmes in:
- Behaviour management
- Understanding your child’s needs
- Opportunities for learning and support from other parents
For parents-to-be there are several antenatal courses. These can help you to prepare for things like labour and birth, post natal depression, and coping with your new baby. There are separate courses for Dads and courses for mums.
Individual Work for parents experiencing difficulties can request individual support (through their health visitor, nursery or social worker) from a range of professional staff on issues which may affect their ability to parent with confidence.
Career Development Advice to support parents of very young children by Sure Start career advisers to develop the educational and employment potential of parents who want to return to work and to advise them on benefits, childcare, options and choices.
